Their answers were indeed exactly what I would&#8217;ve said&#8211;because they were exactly what I <em>had<\/em> said. This is just a piece of a broader problem; when we use words, they&#8217;re labels. These labels may pull up &#8216;folders&#8217; in our\u00a0minds that are full of rich, wonderful stuff. These same labels\u00a0may pull up <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">nothing<\/span> in a student&#8217;s mind&#8211;so when we look to the labels as our assessment, we&#8217;re grading ourselves as\u00a0<em>triggered<\/em> by them, not what they actually possess. Or, as the meme put it (I&#8217;ve cleaned it up a little):<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div><span class=\"text-info\">The three things I learned in college:<\/span><\/div>\n<div>1) I am [expletive]<\/div>\n<div>2) Everyone else is [expletive]<\/div>\n<div>3) Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>Our field, like many others, is littered with this kind of thing: &#8220;ATP is the energy currency of the cell.&#8221; &#8220;DNA is the genetic material&#8221; &#8220;DNA holds information through the specific pairing of the nitrogenous bases&#8221;, &#8220;Enzymes work by lowering the activation energy required for a reaction to go forward&#8221; How can we make sure we&#8217;re talking sense, and equally important, that students are making sense of our talking?<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h1>Overview: Labels vs. the things they label<\/h1>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_627\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-627\" style=\"width: 128px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkbio.guru\/tBioWordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Depositphotos_27993081_xs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-627 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thinkbio.guru\/tBioWordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Depositphotos_27993081_xs.jpg\" alt=\"blank labels\" width=\"128\" height=\"128\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-627\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Labels alone aren&#8217;t much<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I&#8217;ve written <a title=\"Death by a thousand cuts: Vocabulary in Introductory Biology\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkbio.guru\/tBioWordPress\/2014\/11\/vocabulary-biology-naming-parts-rant\/\">elsewhere<\/a> about challenges inherent in any field with specialized vocabulary. In this post, I&#8217;d like to put forward some ideas for delivering\u00a0biology with meaning&#8230; by literally talking different (to paraphrase the Apple ad) and requiring students to do so. Foreshadowing: this will be a post of quotes. For an overview, I&#8217;ll turn to the Bard, who commented on the outcome when we allow students to merely recite sounds and buzzwords in their\u00a0answers:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u00a0It is a tale<br \/>\nTold by an idiot, full of sound and fury,<br \/>\nSignifying nothing.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>&#8211;Shakespeare,\u00a0<em>Macbeth<\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>Beyond getting all poetic on everybody, I&#8217;d like to lead off with some examples. Since I&#8217;m criticizing others, I&#8217;ll take some potshots at me first. \u00a0In my youth, I used to think that \u201cellemenoh\u201d was a letter of the alphabet bc it went by so fast, and only later realized it was L-M-N-O. Everybody thought I knew the alphabet, because I made the right noises when called upon to recite. But I was missing 4 letters and had a special\u00a0one all my own.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Another example emerges in common phrases; I&#8217;m guessing I&#8217;m slow here; even at my age I make regular discoveries such as realizing that a ne&#8217;er-do-well isn&#8217;t just a sound associated with a down-and-out individual; it&#8217;s some one who&#8230; never does well. I failed for years to notice that I could tie all sorts of winged things\u00a0together with one ptera&#8211;<\/div>\n<div><strong>Di-ptera<\/strong>: two-winged, a way to distinguish flies from other insects because flies are rather uniquely possessed of only 2 wings<\/div>\n<div><strong>ptera<\/strong>-dactyl: a finger-winged fossilized beastie (as opposed to arm-winged chickens and hand-winged bats) Note in passing: I&#8217;ll save for another time the fact that I think we should actually go back in time and teach a very select amount of Latin\/Greek to biologists, because a\u00a0<em>small<\/em> amount of understanding here efficiently stores and unlocks a LARGE amount of vocabulary that would otherwise each require its own spot.<\/div>\n<div><strong>helicopter<\/strong> (I got that from the inter webs)<\/div>\n<div>Just recently, listening to Doris Kearns Goowin&#8217;s &#8216;Team of Rivals&#8217;, it occurred to me that &#8216;getting sidetracked&#8217; refers to trains getting taken off the main line and being put on a&#8230; side track.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>My point here is that nonsense (literally&#8211;a lack of sense)\u00a0can hide in plain sight, and that failure of meaning can go in either direction&#8211;I can fail to recognize in\u00a0my own words meanings they blatantly contain\u00a0(by failing to understand compound or derived words originate in fragments that mix to make them), or I can invest <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">your<\/span> words with meaning that they don&#8217;t actually have (like when you repeat to me your textbook&#8217;s statement that &#8216;the lagging strand polymerase also proceeds in a 5&#8242; to 3&#8217; direction, but because of the antiparallel nature of the two strands of the genetic information, must regularly start again, generating Okazaki fragments.&#8221;)<\/div>\n<h1>Sounds vs. meaning&#8211;what to do?<\/h1>\n<p>My overall goal is to present ideas in ways that require students to chew on and digest words&#8211;to pause and consider\u00a0<em>meaning<\/em> rather than collecting word- or even sound-streams. Similarly, when seeking products from students or measuring their understanding, I think we have to prevent them from reciting memorized snippets and push them to transform on phrasing or example into another.<\/p>\n<h3>Talk Different: colorful language as communication<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>The thing that astonished him was that cats should have two holes cut in their coat exactly at the place where their eyes are.<br \/>\n&#8212;<em>Georg Christoph Lichtenberg<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_629\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-629\" style=\"width: 162px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkbio.guru\/tBioWordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Depositphotos_16905531_xs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-629 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thinkbio.guru\/tBioWordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Depositphotos_16905531_xs.jpg\" alt=\"brain organ weight training--cartoon\" width=\"162\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-629\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Do students even lift?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I think the key to ensuring that we are teaching biology with meaning is a combination of choosing our own words to render them noteworthy and constraining our students to <em>synthesize<\/em> during their\u00a0assembly of meaning.\u00a0One way I attempt to achieve this is by purposefully using unexpected, uncommon, or &#8216;off beat&#8217; images or verbal constructions when presenting ideas. I\u2019m hoping to make folks stop and think \u201cwhy does he think <em>that<\/em> phrase fits?\u201d or \u201ccan that be a description of the thing I&#8217;ve always heard of as ________\u201d or \u201chow can you say that about DNA\u201d (or even \u201cwhat is he talking about\u201d). Consider: what do you think the average student visualizes when the phrase &#8220;information molecule of the cell&#8221; passes by in lecture&#8230; anything? Other than &#8220;I should memorize that phrase for the exam&#8221;? I think we can do better with &#8220;These structures [a string of nucleotides] that I&#8217;m projecting on the screen are instructions for everything that happens in your cells&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;the instructions for making a peacock&#8217;s tail look like:&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_375\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-375\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkbio.guru\/tBioWordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/peacock-awesome-desktop-wallpaperts-in-widescreen-free.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-375 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thinkbio.guru\/tBioWordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/peacock-awesome-desktop-wallpaperts-in-widescreen-free.jpg\" alt=\"Image of a peacock crossing a road\" width=\"350\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thinkbio.guru\/tBioWordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/peacock-awesome-desktop-wallpaperts-in-widescreen-free.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.thinkbio.guru\/tBioWordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/peacock-awesome-desktop-wallpaperts-in-widescreen-free-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-375\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.hdnicewallpapers.com\/Wallpaper-Download\/Peacock\/Beautiful-Peacock-on-the-Road<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;&#8230;the choreography for the mating dances of many <a title=\"Jumping spider dance\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JGbwTXmFVbc&amp;list=PL5E95777F36AECE23&amp;index=2\" target=\"_blank\">species<\/a>&#8220;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;&#8230;the sheet music for the <a title=\"Cornell collection of birdsongs\" href=\"http:\/\/www.birds.cornell.edu\/AllAboutBirds\/studying\/birdsongs\/\" target=\"_blank\">songs of birds<\/a> and <a title=\"Insect songs\" href=\"http:\/\/entnemdept.ifas.ufl.edu\/walker\/buzz\/a00samples.htm\" target=\"_blank\">insects<\/a>&#8230;&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Concepts, by definition, are those things that survive after your lecture is translated into Swahili. For this reason, I generally work very hard to make folks THINK about the words going by. A recent example from DNA was trying to avoid the phrase\u00a0\u201cbases interact specifically\u201d or \u201cpair specifically\u201d\u2014these can very easily turn into just\u00a0sounds\u00a0going by, not\u00a0meanings. So I pitched &#8216;unambiguous matching&#8217; because\u00a0I assume nobody has ever spoken to them about that capability of the bases, even though it MEANS precisely the same thing, and thus might lead to more <em>meaning<\/em> if a student takes it apart &amp; rolls it around in their head. There are tons of examples\u2014\u201cenergy currency of the cell\u201d, anyone?<\/div>\n<h3>Reason\u00a0different: teaching by analogy<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkbio.guru\/tBioWordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Depositphotos_55294789_xs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-628 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thinkbio.guru\/tBioWordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Depositphotos_55294789_xs.jpg\" alt=\"Image of brain with icons and linkages\" width=\"261\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a>This is really a topic for a whole other blog post, so I&#8217;ll leave just a snippet here. The Big Idea is akin to the one behind the <a title=\"thinkBio Vocabuwary: mastering through understanding\" href=\"https:\/\/thinkbio.guru\/Modules\/VocabuWary.html\" target=\"_blank\">VocabuWary<\/a> tool I created (coming soon in a plug-in free, plays anywhere version!)&#8211;if a student has only one way of looking at or thinking about and talking about a process, how can we claim that they understand it? Any discussion of transfer involves movement to another medium or domain. Further, many (most?) great scientific thinkers have done some of their biggest thinking analogically&#8211;think Einstein riding on a photon, Darwin comparing Nature-al selection to the selection performed by farmers and pigeon breeders&#8230; and likely the way you present\u00a0<em>any<\/em> complex conceptual framework to new learners&#8230; it&#8217;s a means of providing (or identifying) the scaffold onto which they can construct meaning.<\/p>\n<h3>Examine different: Assessments as big blind spots<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>[For example, we will explain]\u2026why the turtle goes to the sea after laying its eggs by saying that\u2019s an \u2018instinct\u2019\u2026. that\u2019s just a name that feels explanatorily soothing to us\u2026 we very often feel like we\u2019ve explained something when we\u2019ve just uttered a magic word to make the puzzle feel like it goes away.<br \/>\n&#8212;<em>Prof. Jeffrey Kasser<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<div>One place where I think great vigilance is required is on exams, quizzes, etc. where our desire to probe for meaning is in direct conflict with creating assessments that don&#8217;t take months to grade. One quick rule of thumb that I&#8217;ve developed to distinguish between\u00a0<em>labels<\/em> and concepts\/processes\/mechanisms is the &#8216;Name of the thing&#8217; test: if a question loses no value or meaning when\u00a0&#8220;What is the name of&#8221; is tacked on to the front, then it&#8217;s not asking about anything important; it&#8217;s asking what we CALL that important thing. Some examples:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>List the steps in meiosis =&gt; List the names of the steps of meiosis (student with ONLY the labels gets 100% vs. student understanding process but momentarily blanking on\u00a0their Greek fails)<\/li>\n<li>What different machines participate in transcription vs. translation? =&gt; What are the names of the machines&#8230; (students having memorized the symbolic representations =&gt; 100%; students understanding about matching of groups of threes to &#8216;specify&#8217; amino acids, the similarities and differences between joining bases and amino acids fails)<\/li>\n<li>What are the critical components of DNA replication =&gt; What are the names of the machines involved in DNA replication (do we care what they are labeled, or do we care what they do?).<\/li>\n<li>One of my favorites for decades has been questions requiring elucidation of DNA Pol&#8217;s enzymatic activities: &#8220;DNA polymerase has a 5&#8242; to 3&#8242; DNA-dependent DNA polymerase activity, and a 3&#8242; to 5&#8242; proofreading exonuclease, a 5&#8242; to 3&#8242; exonuclease activity. I&#8217;ve gotten this litany from students who have no idea what a &#8216;five prime&#8217; is, or even which\u00a0molecule it&#8217;s associated with.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Listen different: no jargon allowed<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"text-success\">&#8220;If you can&#8217;t explain it simply, you don&#8217;t understand it well enough.&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text-success\"> <i>~Albert Einstein<\/i><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>I\u00a0often encounter challenges with\u00a0upper division students taking introductory biology\u00a0courses. Efforts \u00a0at delivering biology with meaning conflict with\u00a0their &#8216;badges of learning&#8217;&#8211;accumulated multisyllabic labels that they equate with mastery. One of the explicit goals of the courses I&#8217;ve delivered is thinking about molecules as real, physical entities with just a few readily understood\u00a0properties that give rise to\u00a0predictable behaviors. This has manifested as a requirement that students walk back their use of labels such as &#8216;hydrophobic&#8217; or &#8216;electronegativity&#8217; or &#8216;polar covalent&#8217; and to speak instead of how a given atom or region &#8216;feels&#8217; (positive, negative, partially charged, neutral) and why. While many express frustration at\u00a0being handcuffed by this requirement, careful observation by our teaching team suggests that many of our young emperors and empresses actually lack clothing. By requiring them to eschew labels for concrete &#8216;meaning-full&#8217; explanations, we place both ourselves\u00a0<em>and our students<\/em> in a position to actually assay understanding&#8230; and also require them to pick up mental tools that are directly useful in mental manipulations as opposed to containers that may not have anything in them. Of course, the terms are valid and important; I&#8217;ve always allowed students to use any term they wish&#8211;<i>once they&#8217;ve offered<\/i><em> a meaningful explanation of it<\/em> (note I don&#8217;t say definition here, as those are too often unexamined collections of other people&#8217;s words)<\/div>\n<h3>Deliver different: Some concrete examples<\/h3>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0&#8220;See that bird?&#8221; [my father]\u00a0says. &#8220;It&#8217;s a Spencer&#8217;s warbler.&#8221; (I knew he didn&#8217;t know the real name.) &#8220;Well, in Italian, it&#8217;s a Chutto Lapittida. In Portuguese, it&#8217;s a Bom da Peida. In Chinese it&#8217;s a Chung-long-tah, and in Japanese, it&#8217;s a Katano Tekeda . You can know the name of that bird in all the languages of the world, but when you&#8217;re finished, you&#8217;ll know absolutely nothing about the bird. You&#8217;ll only know about humans in different places, and what they call the bird. So let&#8217;s look at the bird and see what it&#8217;s doing&#8211;that&#8217;s what counts.&#8221; (<strong>I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something<\/strong>.)<br \/>\n&#8212;<em>Richard Feynman<\/em>, What do you care what other people think?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One of the hardest things to to is to teach students things they already &#8216;know&#8217;&#8211;to get beyond their\u00a0lovely trees and consider the awesome forest they represent. Frankly, it&#8217;s much\u00a0<em>easier\u00a0<\/em>to memorize details and names than it is to grasp concepts, purpose, and mechanism. This is one of the goals of thinkBio&#8217;s <a title=\"infoFlow: conceptualized view of the Central Dogma\" href=\"https:\/\/thinkbio.guru\/Modules\/InfoFlow.html\">InfoFlow: Protein<\/a>\u00a0(credit here also goes to <em>many <\/em>folks who&#8217;ve given feedback and inspiration)\u00a0software exploration. While everybody &#8216;knows&#8217; biology&#8217;s Central Dogma, most disastrously stated as &#8220;DNA makes RNA makes Protein&#8221; or trivialized as &#8220;DNA &lt;=&gt; RNA =&gt; Protein&#8221;, there are a lot of deep ideas embedded in there; again there is a tension between delivering biology with meaning and tossing trivialities to the sharks. Consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why are bases shaped like bases, but amino acids shaped so diversely?<\/li>\n<li>Is there a reason that the bases are like peas in a pod, but amino acids run the gamut of shapes, flexibilities and &#8216;feels&#8217;?<\/li>\n<li>Why do each have common elements (backbone) and unique elements (sidechains) [dealt with separately <a title=\"What\u2019s important about\u2026 molecules of the Central Dogma?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkbio.guru\/tBioWordPress\/2014\/09\/whats-important-monomers-polymers\/\">here<\/a>]<\/li>\n<li>Could Mars life&#8217;s Central Dogma\u00a0sequence be Protein =&gt; RNA =&gt; DNA ?<\/li>\n<li>Is the only reason DNA &#8216;comes before&#8217; RNA because they&#8217;re alphabetical?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not all of these are addressed in the InfoFlow simulation, but many of the broad concepts are, partly by packaging all of it in an analogy to an heirloom book of recipes (precious DNA copy, all of which is duplicated for a son or daughter), a quick copy of one page (hand-written note used for a\u00a0<em>single<\/em> recipe to be made that day), and the wholly transformed version (a sandwich made from the\u00a0<i>instructions\u00a0<\/i>found in the book).
